It was a year ago that Tyler Bradbury from Liskeard School and Community College represented the South West of England at Cambridge University after we had travelled to Falmouth Maritime Museum for the regional final where Tyler had won the heat.
The ARTiculation speaking competition is designed to showcase the best of our young people who have the opportunity to speak for ten minutes on an Arts subject of their own choice.
For the 2021 competition we held internal heats in November of 2020 and selected a finalist. We selected Tyler Heath.
Over the lockdown Tyler has been attending school to prepare for the competition, held this year at The Box, the newly designed museum and cultural space in Plymouth.
The competition was very different as it was held online and Tyler presented well, representing Cornwall in the heat against students from four other settings:
- Caterham School
- Dr Challoners Grammar School
- Reigate School
- St Michael’s Catholic Grammar School
So, this year Tyler did not win the Regional Final but will receive an alumni badge and an Art Fund National Art Pass.
Adjudicator Phil Rushworth praised Tyler for the choice of subject matter describing it as a ‘clever and brave decision’. She applauded Tyler for drawing out the importance of the pencil in our culture from blueprints to historical artworks all the way to contemporary art. She stated how much she and Tim Mills had enjoyed Tyler’s humour and style of delivery and the artists that were chosen to discuss, additionally congratulating Tyler for going first with ‘such an interesting and creative topic’.
