Due to the cancellation of any physical work experience this year we arranged a World of Work Day for our Year 10 students. It was hoped that this may help them develop some new skills similar to those they would have encountered in the workplace.
The event was run by an external organisation, Cornwall EBP. Some local employers also attended, some in person and others virtually for the event. Students took part in workshops which guided them through applying for further education courses and jobs. They also received tips on interview techniques from visitors and online guests. This was followed by a brief question and answer session.
The main focus of the event was an enterprise challenge which was devised by the Sustainable Tourism course leader from Falmouth University. Students had to develop ideas for a sustainable stay-cation or festival event. The aim was to encourage students to engage with different people from a variety of organisations and participate in a piece of work to help develop transferable skills as they would do with an employer. Students presented their ideas to a judging panel and prizes were then awarded at the end of the day, the winning students were Naomi Donavan, Grace Stevens, Joe Dowlan, Leon Dolbear and Thomas Scales.
All students were fantastic throughout the day and it was felt by the external employers that students embraced the challenges and responded with some well thought out ideas and presentations.
